A 3- way switch is used on each end with one or more 4- way switches in between the two 3- way switches. It is important to understand how these switches are wired before attempting to troubleshoot or replace. Below is a conventional wiring diagram for a 4- way switch configuration. The diagrams below show the conventional wiring for 3- way switches in a 4- way configuration. Unfortunately, not all 3- way switches are wired the conventional way. If you have any problems with these switches, it may be best to call an electrician. Conventional 4- Way Switch Wiring 4- way switches have four terminals each with two pairs of travelers one set usually black and one set usually brass color. A four switch configuration will have two 3- way switches, one on each end and two 4- way switches in the middle. In the diagrams below, the first switch 3- way common terminal connects to line voltage. The first switch 3- way travelers brass color connect to one pair of the second switch 4- way travelers black or brass color.

The following article explains how to perform three-way switch wiring when the power source is at the fixture. Please Note The correct wire MUST be connected to the common screw of a 3-way switch otherwise the switches will not control the light fixtures correctly! The common screw may be located in a different spot on your 3-way switch than the location indicated in the drawings above, but make sure that the wire indicated in the drawings to be connected to the common screw is connected to the common screw of the switch.

For a 4-way light circuit to work, you need two 3-way switches and at least one 4-way switch. If you want more than three locations to control the lights, you will need a 4-way switch for each of those extra locations. Place all the 4-way switches between the two, 3-way switches.
Test the wires to ensure the power is off. Lock out the panel box, so no one can accidentally turn the power back on while you are working. Notice the figure below. Looking at the drawing you will notice that there are 3 sets of cables. One cable bringing in power. One cable going to the light s. One cable connecting both 3-way switches. The cable connecting both 3-way switches is a 3 wire cable. This means that there are actually 4 wires in the cable.
Black, red, white, and a ground wire. The black and red wires are both connected to the traveler screws on the switches. It doesn’t matter which one goes where. As you can see they’re both the same.

Contact Single Pole Switches Single pole switches are used when you need to simply turn something on or off, from a single location. There are two ways to wire for a single pole switch. Switch Leg To wire a single pole switch using a regular switch leg, you need power and a neutral at the switch box. You do not need regular power or neutral at the box of the device being switched.
You then run a regular 2-wire cable , , etc. In the switch box, tie your grounds together with a pigtail and connect the pigtail to the ground wire on the switch. Connect all of the neutral wires together. Connect the power wire to one of the black or brass screws on the side of the switch or, on some switches, simply stab it into one of the holes in the back of the switch if you have more than one power wire in the box, connect the power wires together with a pigtail, and install the pigtail on the switch.
Now connect the black wire from the cable to the light or device being switched to the other screw, or into the other hole, on the switch. Switch Loop To wire a single pole switch using a switch loop, you do not need power at the switch box. You need power and a neutral at the box of the device light being switched. In the switch box, attach the ground wire to the ground screw on the switch.
How To Hook Up A 2 Pole Light Switch?
Next June, A quick note before we get started: An Insteon switch is not the same as a traditional light switch. It is used for home automation and requires other devices for remote control. If you are seeking help to install a non-Insteon switch, this article is not for you. I am an amateur electrician with no formal training, so the process has been a continual learning experience.
Recently, I came across a wiring scenario that I had not seen before involving a 3-Way switch 2 switches controlling a single load.
